Compare Typora alternative

A Typora alternative for people who want the source.

Typora is a beautiful seamless Markdown editor. Quillote is a different trade: a real source buffer, Live styling, and a native phone app. Here is the honest comparison, including where Typora is stronger.

Updated 23 October 2026

Short answer: Typora is the stronger choice for full seamless WYSIWYG, diagrams and document export. Quillote is the stronger choice if you want the Markdown source to stay visible, a 5.2 MB app, and the same editor on your phone. They are different trades, not the same product at different prices.

Typora facts checked on 23 October 2026 at typora.io: version 1.14, the $14.99 price, the 15-day trial, up to 3 devices, and the macOS/Windows/Linux downloads. Quillote facts are from the current 0.1.0 build.

Where Typora is stronger

  • Full seamless preview. Typora hides more of the syntax and shows tables, math and diagrams in the writing view. If that is the experience you want, it does it well.
  • Diagrams and export. Mermaid, flowcharts, DOCX, LaTeX, Epub and Pandoc export are real advantages for long documents and publishing.
  • A mature desktop app. Themes, CSS, focus mode, typewriter mode and a long history on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Where Quillote is different

  • The source stays in the buffer. Live styles the file, but you can always see and edit the Markdown. Source is one key away, and the file on disk never changes format.
  • A code editor next to the prose. Around 100 languages, syntax highlighting, line numbers and lazy language chunks.
  • A phone app. The same three views on iPhone and Android, with a file model built for the way mobile pickers actually work.
  • A small install. 5.2 MB universal Mac DMG and 7.2 MB Android APK. No Electron and no bundled Chromium.
  • No account. The beta is free, local and quiet. No sign-in, no sync service, no telemetry.

Which one should you use?

Choose Typora if you want a polished WYSIWYG Markdown editor on the desktop, especially if Mermaid, DOCX or Epub export are part of your work. Choose Quillote if you want to see the source while you write, keep a code editor beside your notes, and have the same file on your Mac and your phone without an account. Trying both is cheap: Typora has a 15-day trial, and the Quillote beta is free.

Typora on iPhone and Android

Typora's download page lists macOS, Windows and Linux. Its support docs explain working with mobile through a synced folder. That is not the same as a native iPhone or Android app. Quillote ships native shells for both, with Source, Live and Read, and a copy-and-share file model.

Questions

Is Quillote a good Typora alternative?

For some people. If you want a source-first editor with Live styling, a real code editor and a phone app, Quillote is a good fit. If you need Typora's seamless preview, Mermaid diagrams or DOCX export, Typora is the better tool.

Is Typora available for iPhone?

As of 23 October 2026, Typora's download page lists macOS, Windows and Linux. There is no native iPhone or Android app on that page. Its support docs cover working with mobile through file sync.

Is Quillote a drop-in replacement for Typora?

No. Quillote does not render Mermaid or export DOCX, LaTeX or Epub. It is a smaller editor with Source, Live and Read, and it keeps the Markdown visible while you edit.

Is Quillote free?

The public beta is free. Pricing for 1.0 has not been decided. Typora lists a $14.99 license with a 15-day trial and up to 3 devices.

Can Quillote open my Typora files?

Yes. Both edit plain Markdown. Open the same .md file in Quillote. Mermaid diagrams and Typora-specific HTML may show as source or a code block; they are not rendered.
